33 CIRCUIT SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS PART I

You are ready for the first lap and you face the fascination of one of the really legendary international motorsport tracks. It is fast, it is thrilling – and it is cool and wet. These were The Castiron’s impressions, when he attended a track day some months ago in late autumn.

The Castiron and Eleanor V enjoyed this day so much. Wet, humid and finally dry conditions – this very broad range was the setting for a fantastic day, enabling educative experiences with great drifts, cornering with the feeling as walking on eggshells, searching for grip especially in the braking zones and a lot of fun all over.

The Castiron loves this long and varied track. One part must be mentioned extra, the double left at Pouhon. The Castiron and Eleanor V experienced this challenge as follows: you drive downwards, 4th gear, short braking, turn into the first bend, accelerating and looking forward to the exit of the second left. Steering angle and speed in accordance? Preferably just very little corrections of steering wheel and accelerator pedal! And then: you found the point for full throttle and this great feeling of satisfaction arises, when you were very close to the perfect fit!

Part II will bring you closer to the Circuit Spa-Francorchamps.

See you next Friday.

God bless you, all the best!

32 O I O

Oldtimer in Obwalden (OiO). This really special event takes place in Sarnen, the capital of the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland. This beautiful small town is located approximately 12 miles south of Lucerne, on the shore of the Lake Sarner.

It is an annual oldtimer party, and a folk festival in this place. And more: 2014’s special was about 50 years Ford Mustang. And much more, quite difficult to explain in words (the photos just give a limited insight); therefore: come and see and feel the extraordinary spirit of OiO!

The Castiron is strongly convinced, that also this year a broad variety of vehicles of more than 100 years of history can be admired, each of them special.

Please note: on June 3 and 4, 2017 it is time again for the spirit of OiO, in Sarnen, Switzerland (see recommendation). This leaves a few weeks of anticipation, be it as spectator or participant! And: it is really unparalleled, and you will love it!

See you next Friday.

God bless you, all the best!

31 THE BIG FAMILY 201703

The Ford family. No, this time not the family of Henry Ford (1863 – 1947). It is the big family of the Ford automobiles all over the world. One of these is Eleanor V, but The Castiron had relationships with different Ford models, all used cars. For today, let us have a look at two of them, both form the so called bigger line series P7 from Ford Europe - Ford Taunus, with the Ford Cologne V6 engines.

The first one had to cover a certain need. The Castiron was looking around for a towing vehicle for a single-axle trailer and finally bought such a Ford Taunus. This was the very first Ford in The Castiron’s life and served every day and also for the transportation of the light cup racing touring-car on the trailer.

Later on, a similar model belonged to The Castiron’s household. Also in this case an everyday car, until the end came closer: the years had passed by and the mileage meter showed 160'000 miles. Time for a dignified parting. The Castiron participated in a 100 lap race on the track in Lignières, Switzerland. After this race on this short, but challenging track, everything was as before the race – except it was time to say goodbye.

Last, but not least: according to the English Wikipedia, in 1969, the Ford Taunus P7 20M RS of Robin Hillyar and Jock Aird won the 17th East African Safari Rally.

See you next Friday.

God bless you, all the best!

30 PROPER PREPARATION NOT POSSIBLE

A few months ago, The Castiron spent his vacation on an island in the Mediterranean Sea. Beautiful hotel and relaxed holiday atmosphere.

One day, towards midnight, The Castiron sat in a chair in the apartement. He heard a strange noise – similar to tanks driving on tarmac. This noise came closer and closer, grew louder and louder and suddenly, everything was shaking – the floor, the chair, the room, the apartement, the whole building! After a few seconds it was over. Was it over? No, during this night, several aftershocks followed – but not as intensive as the first one.

The Castiron was not frightened, but quite worried. Some questions – no answers. After the second or the third aftershock, he went to see the hotel’s receptionist. His statement was more or less this: I am geologist, but did just get this job here in the hotel. Do not worry, that happens now and then. These earthquakes came in horizontally, this is not a big problem; though the vertical ones are critical. And he was right: those seemed to enter from the balcony and to leave the apartement through the opposite door.

No chance of verifying this man’s answer. Just trusting him and believing what he said. The Castiron recognized: this was similar to the Christian faith. In this situation, he just felt small and helpless. But the clear words from the receptionist gave him the calm to go to bed. The sleep was not the same as usual, a few aftershocks followed, but towards the morning, it was over.

Last week’s blogpost and blogpost 14 dealt with the possibilities of proper preparation, to prevent poor performance. The experience on this island demonstrated tremendously and seriously, that not in any realm of human’s life a preparation is possible. This earthquake had a magnitude of less than 5, so that no damages occurred – it could have been otherwise.

See you next Friday.

29 THE CASTIRON’S P P P P P

Do you remember the blogpost 14 P P P P P? Today’s message and pictures give you an insight into a certain part of The Castiron’s personal five P. The meaning is still the same: proper preparation prevents poor performance.

On one hand is the famous and demanding Nordschleife. SONY Playstation and written documents (one of them: sportauto Ideallinie Nordschleife, special issue) and records are the basic tools for the proper preparation, again and again before every trackday. And: don’t forget to update your personal records whenever necessary and helpful.

On the other hand are the hill climbs or shorter circuits. Take a walk – so simple and easy! The recommendation is easy, not the walk. Up to a length of 5 miles it makes sense. The benefit you get and the time it takes are more or less reasonable. Sometimes The Castiron scouted the route by motorcycle or car; the motorcycle makes it easier to stop wherever you like – for a little walk and looking around, where helpful and necessary. For lengths of 5 miles or more a vehicle is opportune, either way. For shorter circuits a bicycle fits best for the track inspection.

Last, but not least: when The Castiron cannot fall asleep within a reasonable time, he is not counting sheep – he simulates the driving on the track (as an alternative, also praying helps). By simulating one lap on the Nordschleife, usually he falls asleep, before one lap is completed.

See you next Friday.

God bless you, all the best!
